Phase 1: Define 

The “SBC 101: An Introduction” course is divided into five segments. This second segment provides an overview of the Breakthrough ACTION design process and Social and Behavior Change (SBC) Flow Chart. The video focuses on the following phase of the SBC Flow Chart: Define. After watching the video complete the Phase 1 Exercise. Phase 1: Define Exercise

Scenario

Adolescents (aged 15-19) in country X have a high rate of pregnancy – about 55% of girls become pregnant by the age of 19.

The Ministry of Health is concerned about the early age of childbearing and implications for the health and well-being of young girls entering motherhood, in addition to concerns about completion of education and employment.

Identify

  1. Where do we want to go?
  2. Where are we now? Behavioral/social problem
  3. Who is your audience segment of focus for intervention?
  4. What change do you want this segment to make?

Example: Masking on public transportation

  1. Where do we want to go? Everyone on the bus is consistently and correctly masked to minimize the spread of COVID-19 in that environment
  2. Where are we now? Behavioral/social problem: People on public buses in city X are not masking correctly and consistently and therefore facilitating the spread of COVID-19
  3. Who is your audience segment of focus for intervention? Commuters/ passengers on the public bus who are not wearing a mask correctly or consistently
  4. What change do you want this segment to make?  Wear a mask consistently and correctly when they are on the bus

  • Behavior: If you practice behavior X (use a contraceptive method to avoid pregnancy), you can benefit by
  • Key benefit: Finishing education on time and securing a future where you can earn well
